I am a kindergarten teacher. I would recommend your doing the following to learn more about current language arts trends. 1. Do a web search on balanced literacy.
2. Research phonemic awareness. You can find books on this by Creative Teaching Press at local teacher's supply stores.
3. I encourage my students to do journal writing by writing phonetically to show phonetic progress during the year.
