Give yourself some credit! By Bren

You're off to a fantastic start! I'm new to subbing this year and am only called for special ed. assignments. All but one has been above the 6th grade level. Granted, I have a special ed. background, but have never worked| with high school age children. Any child of any age is sure to bore of 6 pages of worksheets. I bet if you got a chance to see how those students behave on other days you would be shocked and proud of what you accomplished! A lot of us are hesitant to bribe, but the fact is that it's the quickest way to establish order without losing the class' respect. I actually have a regular teacher | | I sub for who hands out so much candy and bonus points it drives me insane. But for a first day with no lessons in a classroom like that, it sounds like you did the right things. Another good "bribe" for kids that age is 10 minutes at the end of a period to leave their seats and talk quietly. I don't remember the rules of posting websites here, and this may be where I originally found the site, but here's a good place for crosswords and story starters: www . ##### . com (without the spaces). I also found some neat Mancala-type file folder games at www . teachertools . org. Finally, minute mysteries can fill in 5 minutes to an hour, depending on how much thought the students put into them, and the longer they're guessing the more excited they get to contribute. Here's a website with examples: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/6690/mystery.htm Hope some of this helps. And congratulations on surviving your first day unscathed! Bren
