literacy block
By Janine

Clip to ScrapBook
Kelly,

I am currently one of the teachers in my district piloting the guided reading program. As far as time block- YES! 2 hours is exactly the right amount of time for the literacy block. My students start school
at 9:00 am, from 9-9:30 they have their morning journal(this consists of 2 sentences that need grammar, spelling, and punctuation corrections rewritten in journal book. Also, math message, followed by a seatwork assignment. The morning work takes 30 minutes to complete. By 9:30 I am ready to begin guided reading and centers. We start at 9:30 and last up until lunch time 12:00 pm. Granted,
we do break for restroom/snack, but the children are actively involved in literacy the entire time. Are you aware of the groups? Sizes? how often to see each group? Write back if you need direction on this, I would be more than happy to lend a hand! That's what teachers do!
