I was having exactly the same problem. The advice that I got from a friend was to borrow some story picture cards from the lower elementary teachers and ask the kids to figure out what the main idea - it ad to be something that linked together all the cards. After that, I asked them for supporting details - something that was happening in just one of the cards. This way, I think they got it conceptually.
