I have a degree in psychology as well as elementary ed. and "mentally retarded" is the term we used when referring to individuals with cognitive challenges. It is a legitimate term when used correctly. It can be used in a degrading way, but just because someone uses it does not make them comparable to a racist like a previous poster stated.
I have a cousin who is moderately retarded. I call him what he is in a clinical sense, not meanly. I'd never say that he's a "retard" for example!
I'm sorry to have jumped in so late to this discussion, but I had to say something about it!
