gum and Coke By Carolyn

I won't criticize any teacher who wants to chew gum. It is my personal preference not to chew gum. I have a bad habit, my husband says of cracking it and popping it. Okay, so I'd better not chew it at school! I'd probably| drive the kids equally crazy with it. Also, I don't want my students chewing gum. If they can't chew gum, then I shouldn't, either. I want to try to model the type of behaviors I want them to display. I don't like kids chewing gum, because they don't dispose of it properly. It ends up on the floor and the bottom of the desks. One year when I was teaching seventh grade, a kid | | attached it to my bulletin board. Yuck! As for Coke, my last principal told us that we could not display a Coke can to our students. I think he felt it was unprofessional for teachers to drink from a Coke can in front of the kids. Teachers made a point of hiding it in other containers. They certainly were creative in their methods for hiding their cans! My understanding from our cafeteria staff is that it is against federal law for us to have Coke cans in the cafeteria. Neither teachers, nor students, are permitted to have them in the cafeteria.
