Choosing a credential program
By Michelle Moutes

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi,

As an experienced teacher with 11 years in the classroom prior to becoming a teacher educator I whole-heartedly suggest you choose a graduate/credential program which includes a significant field experience component
that compliments your academic coursework. I don't know if you're considering relocating if so, I think that Bank Street Teacher's College might have such a program. I work in the community college system in California and can recommend some excellent programs in our state university system. Hands-on application is the key to a career as a successful teacher. Whatever you do, do NOT
skip student teaching. Many states allow candidates with just a BA/BS to go straight to the classroom on an emergency permit. I do not recommend this avenue. You will never catch up. A structured, well-supervised student teaching experience can guarantee you a head start on your first year solo in the classroom. Good luck and congratulations on your choice!
