Take time for yourself!
By Kathy

Clip to ScrapBook
Your first year is always tough--everything is new--your profession, the school, the grade level. Everything takes longer the first time around. And, of course, you want to do your best.

I don't have time for a long
post--must get to school myself! But a few "quickie" suggestions:

1. The amount of time you could spend in teaching is limitless. You are never really "done." You can always spend more time on a more elaborate bulletin board, extra activity, more creative lesson, professional reading, etc. You get the point!

You have to decide for yourself how much time you are willing

to devote to teaching and then try not to go past that time. Also, if possible don't take work home. You need time for a break--especially at first! Even if you are just "keeping your head above water," you still need to set limits.

I personally need to spend some time on the weekends just to get things organized for the coming week. But you may want to stay later one night a week or come in early so you won't have to do that.

2. After you have determined how much time you can spend, decide how you will spend it. There's streamlining ideas for grading paperwork that are posted elsewhere on this board. I would suggest you find a teacher at your school who seems to have a handle on things and ask if they would be willing to "mentor" you in organization. (Not my strong suit!)

3. Take care of your health and take time for fun! Your class will actually benefit from this as much as you do as you will go in with renewed energy.

Well, must run so I can get ready for my own little cherubs! Sounds like you are in a good situation with a good support system and a great class. I have always loved teaching third grade. Don't be too hard on yourself--and just remember it will get easier--and it can be better--even this year!!
