what did you decide to do?
By just curious

I agree that most principals will feel this is petty and a waste of time. If you feel that you have to say something to someone speak to the teacher by saying"Wow! I didn't realize we could chew gum. Is this ok for me
to do?" Maybe it will bring it to her attention. I know when I was student teaching, a teacher wrote only one negative comment(everything else was outstanding) "don't forget to get rid of your gum." Maybe it is ok for you to chew gum there. While my principal doesn't allow it, that doesn't mean I wouldn't if I could. I think discreetly is fine(popping and smacking would be out of line--my
opinion). As far as drinks, I talk all day and need something. I don't openly drink my soda around the room , but I do have a soda at my desk, sometimes poured into a cup, sometimes not but I need that! I let the kids go get drinks of water and I explain that I can't leave them to get a drink, so I have to have it at my desk. This usually satisfies them.
Hope you will rethink if you haven't said something already.
