Not normal!

That must have been such a frustrating day for you! In my experience, this is not normal, but I have had similar experiences. I would definitely leave a note to the teacher explaining difficulties that you had due to lack of information. Sometimes the teacher doesn't realize that not everyone thinks like they do and they could use some "constructive" criticism.
