I read the first one and gave it to my fourth grade nephew who is a low reader. He enjoyed it but it is quite challenging for him. He is continuing the series though. The vocabulary is tough and there are a lot of inferences. What I thought would most appeal to him was the bad news story line, the small size of the book (like a paperback), the limited text on each page, and the "new" series idea. I was right about the appeal. He cannot pass an Accelerated Reader test on them though.
