journal writing and topics
By Lisa

Clip to ScrapBook
I do journals once a week and assign a topic. Usually it is about some experience they had (ie. a recent fieldtrip or planting in our garden), but other times I will read a book that relates to a particular topic (family, favorite pet, etc). At the beginning, the children were just drawing pictures, but now I am really encouraging "kid writing," and I want them to write down either letter strings or approximated spelling. Some children are just writing down random letter strings (fine, I want to boost their confidence), others are writing down beginning sounds and I have some children who are writing down words with spaces in between. It just depends on the level of the child. I am very excited about the progress of our journals.
