I teach it using Robert Munsch's From Far Away. It's about a girl who comes from a war torn country and her difficulties assimilating into the culture. Then we talk about how this child's experience is like that of other children. We also connect it to particular areas that are facing war, etc. You can also use Dear Children of the Earth (don't know the author) which talks about keeping the earth clean -- easy links to global problems.
