In our district we are required to do them once a month (24 1st graders). This is good for the struggling readers (to keep track of strategies being used), but if their reading is progressing where you think they should, I think every 6-8 weeks would be sufficient. With this schedule, I only have time for reading groups three weeks and running records one week during the month. It's a lot of work!!!
