    I think you are just trying to get the kids to make a mental link between what they know in the real world and what is in the material they are reading.

    For example, if the story has sibling rivalry in in, ask kids to think about how they treat their brothers or sisters, and how their brothers or sisters treat them. Do they ever fight? Do the older kids pick on the little ones? How do the older kids feel about it? Why do they do it? How do the younger kids feel? Poll the kids to see if they are older siblings, younger siblings, or only children. Have them discuss how their opinions are different about the kids in the story from their own position as older or younger siblings.
