Advanced reader

Clip to ScrapBook
I don't think it's a good idea to send a kindergarten student up--particularly if she wants to be where she is at. I agree with the posts about socialization--also, it could be a bit of a put-down for struggling second
graders to have a 5-6 year old "outshine" them.

I teach third grade right now--and I can't say I would be too excited about adding a Kindergarten student into my mix--for many reasons!

I would think you could work with this within your own classroom. I taught first grade for ten years--and like Cathy-Dee--usually had one or more advanced readers every year I taught. (One year one

of the six year olds was reading The Black Stallion.

It wasn't usually too hard to accomodate them since most good readers love to read. As previous posts have mentioned, this child will have many years to be in school!

I started reading when I was four and read well above grade level by the time I hit first grade. I don't remember ever being bored because I just loved to read. I'd finish my work and then go read!! My good readers in grades 3 and 4 do exactly that/

How about doing some chapter books with this child? The world is full of wonderful books just waiting to be explored!

If the parents are insistent that she be in some formal type of program, there are several series that have stories and then comprehension questions after them. (Although my professional opinion would be at this age she would be better off just reading.)
