Kindergarten = babysitting??
By Mary A.

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi and welcome to a wonderful profession! I, too, have received the same negative response from people and even the staff I have worked with. The other response that is equally annoying is when I tell people I am a Kindergarten
teacher, they all respond with an "Ah, how cute" or "Ah, how fun". Yes it is fun, but it is also A LOT of work. In the 10 years that I have been teaching K, the standards we are held to are much more rigorous. I feel that I am now teaching a first grade curriculum in a 3 1/2 hour Kindergarten day. Remind your dad, that Kindergarten is a time when we instill the basic foundations
of learning in children. You are the one introducing them to reading, writing, and mathematical concepts. All the while, teaching them how to listen, follow directions, and learn to separate from home. I agree, you should have him come in and visit. Invite him in to read a story to the class. My class loves having other people read to them. Good luck!
