Hi! I teach JK and I have a couple of "active" kids. When I spoke to the parents I discovered that they had not really socialized with other kids their age. One child plays with a 2 yr old and that is where he seems to learn his behaviour to hit when he wants something. Your little guy might be seeking attention from you. And there is nothing wrong with making him clean it up, it shows him responsibility. My suggestion is look to see him doing something appropriate and praise him for this. Hopefully he will seek your praise with positive behav. It is also a good idea that you talked with mom and she hopefully gave you some insight of what he may be like at home. Good Luck!!
