I've used AR for many years. Here's what has worked best for me. My 5th graders focus on % toward goal, even comparing the % of nine weeks with their % of goal. My students are required to keep at least an 80% percent correct average or higher. At 25 % of their goals, students can drink a pop in class; at 50 % they get to choose a younger class to share a book with; at 75% I give the student a lunchsized brown bag with the words "Snack in a Sack" written on it--they can fill the bag with anything and bring it to school the next day to eat in class; at 100% the students are eligible to attend the 5th grade goal party: we've had progressive lunches, museum outings, kickball games, board games, popcorn and a movie, etc. This works for me. We also focus on certification level and moving reading ranges up. If a student reads 3 or 4 books at the top of her reading range, I move her up. This motivates a lot of my students. Hope this helps.
