I teach 5th grade and buddy with a Kindergarten class. We use the Accelerated Reader program in our school, so my students read books to their partners and quiz them one day each week. We, too, have helped the younger students write: letters to Santa, directions for baking a turkey, and stories. Sometimes K will bake something that starts with the letter of the week they're studying and share the goodies with us. Both 5th grade and K curriculum include a plant unit. As a culminating activity we went to our high school greenhouse and the Vo-Ag teacher and her students helped us plant; so each group had a high school student, a 5th grader, and a K student. Lots of fun; good for pictures. Sometimes we just go play on the playground together on a beautiful day. What I notice is 5th graders "sticking up for" younger students on the bus, playground, and lunchroom. I also have watched some pretty tough guys become compassionate and kind. I love the "buddy" groups.
