Please don't give up so quick. I have been teaching for many many years. My first three years were terrible! I had the kids who were in 4th grade but on a 2nd grade level. Not only were they slow learners, they were juvenile
delinquents as well. I had several miss school beacause they were in juvenile detention for breaking and entering and so forth. I felt like a failure to these children and to the school system period. I blamed myself every time one of these kids missed school because they commited a crime. I have even went so far to reach out and help one parent raise money for court fees for
her son who, not on his first, or his second, or his third, but his fourth offense of assult and battery on a child under the age of 6. I treated them as nice as I could, I sat with them one on one to make sure that their work was completed. I had NO support from other teachers OR my principal. Parents weren't too involved or not involved at all. I told myself, at the end of each year, that I would not be coming back to that school, but some reason, I did.

After 3 years, and much stress, I finally made the move to another school altogether. I have been here ever since, and am not planning on going anywhere soon. I am not sure what advice I could give you. If they hit you, send them to the office (it is assult), if they spit on you, send them to the office, if they cuss you, send them to the office. Eventually, the principal will know , hey something is going on here that needs attention. Just because you send those children to the office who are disruptive or defiant on a daily basis, doens't mean that you can't handle it. It means that you care enough to weed out the bad ones, so you can give the ones who are good a fair opportunity to learn in a safe, calm enviroment. Many may not agree with sending them to the principal, but I do.

For my discipline plan is as follows:

First offense: verbal warning
2nd. written (name on board, index card etc...)
3rd parent contact
4th office referral.

It has worked with my kids for years (since I changed schools) The key is to stick to it, don't back down at all. They will take advantage of you so quick. Sorry this message is so long. I have never written a message, but I always read them.
