Clip to ScrapBook
I have tried the Harry Wong "give me five" routine, and found that my voice just blended in with those of the students'. I got a set of wind chimes at the store and ring them. When students showed signs of "I'll finish my conversation, then get quiet," I wrote the word RECESS in big letters on the board. If they aren't quiety immediately (5 seconds), I erase a letter from the word starting with the "S." They know that if I have erased the whole word, they don't get an afternoon recess. They start paying attention right away.
