Sorry it has taken me so long to post. I have had some problems getting my responses on the board. I'm going to keep this short, but feel free to ask more questions.

What do I do if I don't give detention or take away
recess? Here's a list:

1. Have the student call their parents and discuss the situation. This can get them back on track

2. Have a meeting with the student. Try to findout what the root of the problem is. Once that is identified work with the student to develop a plan that might help improve things. Adjust and continue to talk with the student as needed.

3. Set up regular appointments

for the student with the school guidance counselor (again, as much as needed).

4. Find a mentor for the student. Sometimes another teacher in the building has a good relationship with the student and can help out.

5. Talk to the parents about the situation and seek help from them. Ask them for their help.

Some students have more serious problems than others. Sometimes it takes months before I suddenly realize that drastic improvements have taken place. Sometimes just a week or two. I have to keep at it.

Sending a student to detention or taking away recess does not, in my opinion, do anything to solve the problem in a constructive way. It does not allow you to learn what is going on and it does not try to make long term changes. Therefor, I don't use it.
