Since it sounds like this is an isolated incident, I think your idea of having the cleaning lady leave the mess on the floor is a good one. If it were my class, I think I would just let them see the mess--make them clean it up--and then let them know this can't happen again.

I personally dislike the idea of using writing as a punishment.
