rounding answers
By S.E.

Clip to ScrapBook
My students (fourth grade) are learning to round the numbers first. Say it's 53 + 68. Well, 53 is close to 50. 68 is close to 70. So 50 + 70 = 120. I find that not all of them have the mental math skills to do this. But I'm encouraging them to do this BEFORE they calculate their answers. The other thing I'm trying to do is teach them "mental math tricks" that get them used to rounding. For example when we play mental math games and it's adding 9 to a number, I say "Add 10, subtract 1" so they are getting used to adding by 10's or associating numbers with multiples of 10.

I'd be interesting in hearing what other teachers do, as I too would like to help my students develop this valuable skill.
