Will this work?

I'm assuming you're doing sequencing for expository type writing--? An idea:

Make lists of out-of-order sequence words (third, next, then, first, finally, start by, next, etc.) and have students work in teams with the
lists.

Then, they are to rewrite their list to show the time-order sequence correctly. You could have them accomplish this task by having vertical columns down the pages to show which words go in which column to show the proper order. For example, the students should have FIRST, START BY, BEGIN BY listed in the first column. This first column part can be done as a whole class before

they work on their own.

Next, pass out slips of paper to each team that have specific topics on them that say, WRITE 5-10 STEPS THAT EXPLAIN HOW TO.... make a paper airplane.... make the capital letter A (or any other letter)....find the word 'magazine' in the dictionary.... draw a tree....etc.... Time order words from the lists must be used.

Or you could just choose one topic for the whole class.

The teams can then exchange their directions with another team and follow the directions EXACTLY as given to them. Discuss and show how the results were successful or not.

If you're feeling brave, you could have a list of ingredients for a PBJ sandwich on the board, which the teams must write the step-by-step directions for making, using the time order words from their lists correctly!
