I have the kids make up a store. Whatever theme we are working on the kids draw items on index cards and then they price them under 99 cents. One year we were doing dinosaurs and they made items for dinosaurs, claw shapeners, blankets, toys, leashes, dishes, etc. Last year we did space and they made space related stuff, like mars scooters and moon glow sticks.
Then I gave each student a bag of plastic money and they could purchase 2 items. some kids were cashiers with a calculator. At first they could only give exact amounts, but as some got better with money they even began to give change.
They had a lot of fun with this store.
