Reading Groups
By Bobbie

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi Jennifer! I teach 2nd grade and here's what works for me...I choose my reading groups according to a few things: Stanford Achievement Test scores, Pre-Assessments given the first 2 weeks of school, and results from the
DIBELS assessment we give. These make it really easy to divide into groups. I have 4.(frogs, butterflies, whales, and bunnies) I have 4 because it keeps my numbers down in the 'lower' groups. Right now, I have no more than 5 in a group. I meet with the lower groups Mon., Tues., Wed., and Fri. The highest group I usually meet with on Monday, give them an 'enrichment' assignment, then
meet with them again on Friday to share & discuss their project (be it a book report, a semantic mapping, etc.)
My students that are not in groups rotate centers every 20 min. (which is how long I keep my groups). I have books on tape, CD-ROM activities, word tiles, flash cards, and a writing center.
This is the first year I've managed to really get the centers going, and it is working soooo well. (knock on wood)
Email me anytime...
