Clip to ScrapBook
My class sounds a lot like yours. I try to use things that they think are cool. Like I say "Scooby Doobo Doo" and they say "Where are you, we've gotsome work to do now" they enjoy that one a lot. One of the other 3rd
grade teachers at my school came up with it and it works great. I also use different clapping rhythms that they have to echo. I have also used songs...my favorite is Garth...I start saying "Maybe" and they finish with "Completely wrapped up in school" You could use just about anything that they are interested in. My class still talks a lot even with these tips. SO my last ditch plan
is I begin counting down starting at 5 and if I get to zero before they are quiet then they miss recess. I try not to do that often because I don't like to punish all when it is only a few. When I do get to zero and say the class is missing recess then I try to recognise those that are rarely in trouble when they do something good and say "Congratulations your (honesty, determination, respectfullness, etc) has served you well, you have earned your recess back. This way I can let those that are usually doing the right thing have recess without singling out the negative behavior. I hope some of this helps...
