2. What I like most about teaching is the kids. I really do LOVE them and seeing their smiles and faces light up when they see me. They know I love them, and they love me. They know I will do just about anything I can for them. 3. What I like least about teaching is that I cannot find a permanent job. The kids do love me and so do the parents. The kids learn best with me as their teacher, but I have been a substitute teacher for about nine school years. I am not being hired. I think it is because I am a male, in a predominately female profession. Also, since the kids do love me so much and I make many other teachers look bad. Fortunately, I happen to be independently wealthy, as well. I don’t care really how much I get paid and I do a bang up job, on a substitute’s salary. I make the regular teachers look bad. So I don’t get hired. I also don’t like how unfriendly and competitive teachers are with those they do not work with on a regular basis. 4. The most important qualities needed are flexibility, love and patience. 5. I went to college for a few years before I decided to be a teacher and just took the general education classes. Then when I decided to be a teacher, I majored in Math Education. I then went to a different college to get my teacher certification. Since finishing, I have taken MANY continuing education classes, on a wide variety of subjects and classes. 6. I have not yet earned my Master’s degree, but I am working on getting an MA in Science Education right now. 7. What made me want to become a teacher, is that I wanted to interact with people, kids specifically, and to have a job where I would be able to get up and move around a lot and change what I do from day to day and within a day. I also really wanted to make a difference in the world. I wanted to be able to help the world be a better place. I had brain surgery in 4th grade and my teachers protected and cared for me when no one else would. 8. If I could change things, I would change the reliance on state standards, benchmarks, etc. What a complete waste of time. And energy. Politicians cannot do their jobs effectively. I don’t know how they think they can tell teachers to do theirs. 9. I will never forget all of the fun times and laughter I have had with the kids I have taught over the years. I will never forget how many times kids have told me that they love me being their teacher and wish I was their “real” teacher and that their “real” teacher would be the substitute. 10. The most rewarding part of the job of a teacher is knowing that you are doing the most important job in the world. And knowing that the rewards last for generations. 11. I really never have thought of leaving and doing something else. I LOVE what I do. Many other friends and family have suggested I leave and find something else, since I have not been hired full time, but since I can afford it, I will not. 12. I teach all grades in the elementary school, and all subjects, too. 13. The most important skills for this career are those of organization and patience. Also being flexible. And being able to do what you know is right, even if the “wack-o’s” say you can’t. You really need to act like and be a professional at all times. 14. I knew I wanted to be a teacher after having seen the movie “Stand and Deliver” and after having heard the tape of Guy Doud. 15. my only advice is to make sure it is your passion to be a teacher. The day you don’t want to be there or cannot find the love of teaching in your life is the day you should quit for your sake, but more importantly for the sake of the kids.
