beneath us? By sj

Subs aren't beneath us--they just fill a different role. We're not beneath a principal--we fill a different role. Part of being a successful teacher or sub is accepting the limitations of the role you play. I have a good| friend who has had her administrator's certification for 4 or 5 years now, but continues to stay in the classroom because she wants to wait until her children are older. She doesn't consider herself an administrator, doesn't expect to be treated like one, and doesn't expect to be part of their group. She sees herself as a teacher who will someday be a "real" administrator. Right now | | she is playing/filling the role of teacher. When you are the sub (or teacher, or whatever you are) you have to accept the limitations of that role, understand that you won't be considered to be something that you aren't currently in the role of, and bloom where you're planted. If there are teachers out there who are intentionally rude or condescending, I hope they do read your posts and change their attitudes--But in my 20+ years as a teacher and 4+ years as a sub, I've not witnessed attitudes such as Heather has described. Hopefully, if she accurately describes the situation, it is rare. I hope that most places are like all the places I've been--where teachers and subs are neither above nor beneath anyone.
