Spec. ed. subbing By Ken

I just finished my 3rd day in a middle school ED room. I've been in as the aide all 3 days and am comfortable with that but know I can also step in at the teacher level as I've had some time to observe her style and, hopefully,| dovetailed my own with hers. I sub'd several times last school year for this teacher and her aide and the routine came back to me quickly. Like you, Jami, I really enjoy the challenge. I'd rather work hard and come home tired than sub. in a situation where I play the same video over and over all day. This particular teacher (and aide) are wonderful to work with. Although there | | is little time for talk I've learned to observe and try to always look at how they handle situations with the kids and copy that as best I can. The less change in the routine for the kids the better they cope.Today was tougher only because I had to cover for another teacher for 3 hours and wanted to be back in the ED room as I knew she was swamped with quarter-end grades, etc. I gave most of my lunch time to help grade math packets and was pleased to help in that small way. I agree that a sub. for the teacher and a sub. for the aide is not optimal but, if one of the two is familiar with the room, kids, materials, etc. it should work out and I believe most teachers would understand if not all work is accomplished as there will likely be some front-end work with the kids before lessons can be worked on. Best, Ken in WI
