Hi,
I agree with the above posters that many feel unqualified. I will take special ed if it is elementary K-6.

My advice is KEEP IT SIMPLE. Most special ed rooms do not have 25 students so if you can write a little
something (background info) about each student that would be helpful. Especially any problems that occur frequently and how YOU handle them when they occur.

Most subs have their hands full when they come in in the morning, figuring out where everything is, finding the bathroom, etc...so leave instructions for SIMPLE activities while you are gone, not because I am stupid, because

everything is unknown.

I have been in reg. ed. rooms where teachers have left 2 pages of info, for ONE activity. If I have been in the room several times and know the routine and the kids that is perfectly fine but for the first couple times, I think the majority of time needs to be spent of interacting positively with the students, not trying to balance time between them and reading directions.

Also once you find a sub you like and they like being there, set dates ahead if possible, request them if possible. I love nothing more than going into a room that I already know the routine and the children. THEN you can make the lesson plans a little more detailed and you can relax knowing the room is in good hands while you are gone.

I hope you find someone you like and is willing to fill in. Sue P
