If you're looking for a job in a different state, I don't think you have much to worry about. Moving to another state is a perfectly legitimate reason to look for a new job and ask your principal for a reference--much easier
than saying you're planning to leave because you don't like the school.

I wonder how teachers who just want to find a job in another nearby school or district handle the job search. Many districts ask for a letter from your current principal, which seems like an awkward thing to ask for.

I wonder if it would be acceptable to tell the district where you're applying, "I'm not

comfortable letting my principal know I'm looking elsewhere so early in the selection process, but if I emerge as a serious candidate for the position, I will certainly provide a recommendation letter"? That's the way it works in the business world --no employer expects applicants to announce they're looking elsewhere until it's clear they're being seriously considered for a position. They don't contact your current employer unless they're serious about hiring you.
