Fabric scraps
By Bren

Clip to ScrapBook
When dealing with students in Special Ed. who are easily distracted or "fidget", I have made scraps of fabric for them. I cut a square of courdory (or another material with a unique texture) about 3" x 3" for each child. They were then instructed to keep their square inside their desk on the pencil tray or somewhere they can reach it easily. When they became frustrated or antsy they would quietly pull their square out of the desk and rub it between their fingers and thumb. It wasn't long before students seemed to reach for their squares without thinking. It kept them quiet, limiting disruption, but it also let them have the movement their bodies seem to need.

Hope your situation has already improved!
