Big, Loud Class
By Kat

Clip to ScrapBook
I think as teachers, we are all showing much empathy for you and your all too common dilemma! I'm not sure what grade you teach, but my first graders have really taken to this morning approach. As soon as they walk in the
door, they sit at the rug area. Picked by who is sitting criss-cross, hands in their lap, and quietly, I have a "junior teacher" lead the class in a song or our ABC Chant, Blends Chant, etc. This motivates them to behave immediately as they walk in. During the song, I hold up color cards. If they are wearing that color, they may put their backpack away and go to their seat where their
warm-up is waiting. Whoever is first done with their warm-up (and I decide if it is "done."), gets to take the attendance to the office. This is great motivation for them. My little kiddos love their recess or free time, so an ongoing management method I have is that once they get out of control, I quietly and calmly walk up to the board and draw an eye. If I end up finishing the sad face, they loose recess/free time.
Hope some of this helps! Good Luck
