count to 5
By Maria

Clip to ScrapBook
I just started to use this strategy. By the time I count to 5, everybody needs to be quiet and looking at me. If students continue to talk, I start taking away recess minutes. For each number counted after 5, I take away 1 minute of recess. This has been very effective in my class. They really encourage each other to get quiet. I rarely have to take away recess time. If just one or two students are talking, I take away time only from them.
