To PJM and others, I'm curious
By Cathy-Dee

Clip to ScrapBook
In a few posts it was mentioned that you had asked BLS to not use that term - you made it sound like she posted frequently and used the term a lot. Another poster even referred to her as another Jay...

So I went back and
looked at posts.

I found two from BLS - One on this board back in September and one on the special ed board. Even with using the term she apologized as she wasn't sure what term to use and explained why. She also seemed very apologetic afterwards.

I understand you do not like the "word" but I'm sure you could have brought it up in a much nicer way and still offered some good advice

to BLS.

Now if she has posted more frequently please let me know where all the posts are, but from what I've seen she is simply trying to deal with a situation she really shouldn't have been put into in the first place without support. And calling the student "mentally retarded" was not done in a way that was derogatory to that student. Trust me down the road the "newer terms" we use will end up being used in a derogatory manner and then we'll have to find new terms again. We are not even supposed to use the term handicapped anymore. It does become confusing especially when some school districts still use the terms, when government funding agencies use the term, when other special ed teachers use the term.
