Since my last post I have vowed to stay out of this mess. My sisters son is impaired and the association that she used to belong to also used the old terms because it was charted in the dark ages. Many of the parents have| stopped belonging due to the fact the name hasn't changed. My local district support groups is also blank for the retarded and I have had every parent for the last 5 years refuse to join because of the name. The only members that have are people that are impaired over thirty. That ought to tell you something. They are in the processing of changing the name. Most people won't even support | | the Knights of Columbus and the Tootsie Roll drive because it says retarded. These terms, organizations were established in the 60's and early 70's when people didn't know any better. It, too, unfortunately dates people as many older adults use this terms because they grew up with it. If you haven't noticed the young lady in question has stopped using the word. You, I find completely out of line to attack me for trying to educate her. A parent of a young child in todays school system would find it terribly offensive.I simply wanted her to stop saying it before she talked to the parents and really get them upset. I was trying to help. I won't anymore. Your child is older and you got used to the term. I will continue to fight to get the name removed from every organization I know. I am not going to involve myself in this anymore. I don't claim to begin to imagine why you think it is ok but I for one and the people in my 2 state area do not. Thank goodness my students and parents don't have to be exposed to mean people like you. To me it is a almost like a racist, derogatory comment and no longer socially acceptable.
