I make a sheet of flashcards for them to cut out with a word on each. On Monday mornings, it is their morning work to cut these words out. There are ten, and by now they can put them in ABC order by themselves. To check,| we play the "ABC Game." I say the abc's, and if I say a letter that begins one of the words, they get to yell out "stop", and raise their hand. This gets them involved, because how often do they get to "yell" out in class? After we make sure everyone's words are in ABC order, we play "Fastest Finger." I made this up when most of my students were watching "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" | | at home. None of them really recognize the connecton anymore, but they still like the game. In Fastest Finger, our words are still in ABC order on our desk. I say a sentence and leave a word, a sight word, out. They let me know which word I left out by having the "fastest fingers" to choose it and put it under their chins. This way, I can quickly see who knows it and who doesn't. I call on someone, and they share the word. After they share the word, everyone puts the word in their zip-lock bags. When we finish with the last word, everyone's words are put away. My class loves these "games" that introduce their vocaculary each week. Please e-mail me and let me know if any of these suggestions were useful to you.
