poems
By Debbie

Clip to ScrapBook
I teach first grade and have a poem of the week. The first day we introduce the poem and read it several times, having students come up to the poem (written on large tagboard)and point to the words with a fun pointer as the class reads. The next day I have the poem run off on regular paper and cut it into strips, usually 4-5 strips with two sentences on each strip. The students glue the strips back together to make the poem (like a puzzle) and then illustrate it (glued onto construction paper). During the rest of the week we do phonics activities like the previous writer said she does. The puzzle part is done in a literacy center during reading groups. Hope this helps.
