disagree

I disagree you that you should not cancel your prior commitments. Although we all want to spend the day volunteering in our own child's classroom, I think you need to decide how important your job is to you. Your child's teacher probably has 15 other parents that are willing to come in and help. Since you sound like this job is new to you, I would say to take everything possible at first. Once you get established with a number of teachers who will always call you then you can be more selective about when you work and when you volunteer.
