"Elmer"
By Suzanne

Clip to ScrapBook
In my Phonics class this summer, the professor had
us write Whole Part Whole lessons for each lesson plan she assigned us. For example, reading "Elmer" can be
the Whole including a discussion of the book, the part could
be a phonics sound you want to focus on, and then you can bring the lesson back to the Whole by reading either another book by David McKee or a "Just So" story about an elephant by Rudyard Kipling.

Another activity could be a lesson integrating science and language arts, a good reason for reading a Kipling story. A third activity can be another elephant story or even correlating "Elmer"

with "Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat" (you should be able to rent the video or at least rent the music from it. Ask your mother about the story/play if you don't know it. The music is wonderful and everyone (children included) will be singing the song for weeks.

Hope that helps.
