You might end-up surprised.... By brian

Congratulations on your first two terrific years! Once you get this class settled, you might end-up surprised and find that this year will be the best ever! It sounds like a lively, vibrant group of children who need firm| boundaries. I suspect there may be more than the usual number of "spirited" students in this particular group, and the other students are following the leaders, so the net effect is an entire class that is misbehaving. It's not a BAD group of children; it's simply that a troublesome group-dynamic has been established in class. I'd be inclined to devote a day to behavior. First thing | | in the morning I'd sit the students down on the carpet, get-out the marker and poster-paper, and work as a class to write-up the class rules and expectations, as well as the consequences for both good and bad behavior. Have them each sign the completed document and accept responsibility. You might even consider having the Principal come in once it's completed, and have the students give a presentation to him/her, explaining the rules you've all agreed upon - greeted with much praise, enthusiasm and encouragement from you and the Principal! (I'd end the day by handing-out a treat like red licorice, etc.) Btw, have you discussed the problems with the First-Grade Teacher(s)? Good luck! You can do this, and you're going to be very proud of your class and yourself!
