motivation

I have a few students this year that don't seem to care about any of their work- penmanship, spelling, correctness (Is that a word?), etc. It is so frustrating to see their abilities wasted. I have tried having them re-do things, I've tried praise when the do something well, and it's worked with some, but there are a few who just don't seem to respond. I'd love to hear any ideas.
