A hypothetical answer By Cathy-Dee

In this case I would think that the student might be held back simply because he did not complete the program. Providing there were no other reasons - he was able to do the work, and just didn't then retention is definitely| a possibility. While parents do influence the decision - a teacher and school can over-ride the parents by taking it up with the school board and getting their backing in this. Some schools (administrators) do not like walking out on the plank in these situations so they do place the child into the next class. The child when he gets to middle school will no longer have the luxury | | of sitting back and doing nothing as he will fail specific classes. The other children are smarter than we sometimes believe them to be. They know what Johnny is like and they are not going to model themselves after him. By grade 5 they also know that education is important if they want good jobs, etc., And many come from families who wouldn't tolerate their children not putting any effort into their schooling. However when all is said and done - there is a reason Johnny is acting the way he is and hopefully a teacher would be able to find out what the problems are and help Johnny turn his educational career around.
