Clip to ScrapBook

I think this is the scaffolding, or partitioning, method...right? I referred to it further down this Board, but you are the first person I've "met" who has heard and learn of it.

It's a great method, but can be confusing
for students if they're expected to do the long division with another teacher, and they don't have a clue! I think, though, that if you teach the partitioning method first, then teach the long way later in the year. It will be much easier for the students.

What are your thoughts?

I tried it with my 4th graders last year, but just briefly.... most of them were too low in their

basic skills to understand what was being done. However, I did have a few who were able to grasp it, and a few others who couldn't get themselves out of the long division mode.

SO....as soon as I get situated in a fulltime class this year, I am going to work my students toward understanding the partitioning method.

The only way to demonstrate this method here on the Board is by email attachment. I'll be happy to provide that using Carolyn's sample.
