Praying for you!

James, I can totally relate to your situation there! In fact, I had wondered if you got my 4th graders from last year! I kid you not....I had THE most challenging class of all time, but what made it the most challenging
for me was the lack of support I received from my principal. These were the "throw away" kids, and many of them needed special services, but were not getting them.

I learned that I had to take matters in my own hands....Like you, Lee Canter's approach wasn't the cure-all. There were some things in LC that matched my philosophy on discipline, but overall, I found myself doing things

that I was so totally opposed to! I just didn't like treating my students like animals (bribing them with treats, etc.). My kids were expecting rewards for the littlest things...

Right when I reached my breaking point, I attended an amazing conference on raising responsibility. I'll be more than happy to share the whole kit and kaboodle with you through email (attachment), so let me know.

The gist of it all, was that this particular system removed the power struggle that was occuring in my class on a daily basis, as well as give back to me the joy of teaching. My kids had to take responsibility for their own actions/decisions, and they knew there were consequences.

They also knew that I meant business.

I had only a few months to use this system with these kids, but I can tell you (no, I will shout it!): IT TOTALLY TRANSFORMED MY CLASSROOM.

If you go to this website, it will tell you more about The Raise Responsibility System. Also, if you go the Classroom Management Board to page 1, you will see several discussions on this system, as well as some other ideas that blend in with it (Love and Logic).

And....I know exactly what you mean about your presence at church
