sounds familiar

Many of the behaviors that you have described sound a lot like my first year teaching. I had PARENTS coming in before school ever started expressing their condolences for having such a horrible class.

It was a very rough
start. Behavior management was not one of my strengths during my first year. Finally, in October, I sat down and decided things had to change. Every single privledge was taken away from every student. They now had to ask permission blow their nose! If they did not ask permission for anything they lost sticks. (That is part of my discipline policy I will share if you want me to later.)
I have to admit, it drove me insane pulling stick for such trivial things, I felt like such a witch.

However, I kept doing it EVERY time a rule was broken. After a while, I did not have to pull sticks for the trivial things. They eventually got the privledge back of getting up to blow their nose without asking me. By January, I would not say they were a PERFECT class, but they had changed for sure. By the end of the year, I was actually sad to see them go!

What ever your policy and rules are, stick with them. BE CONSISTENT. Do not let them get by with breaking the rules even one time. They will always think they can do it again.
