Frustrating day
By Ken

Clip to ScrapBook
Eric,

I'm wondering if much of this same behavior goes on with the regular teacher(s). If the behaviors you describe are going on in 5th grade I sure hate to see where they stand in 8th grade - high school.

A few weeks
ago a gang, many very young, beat a man to death in Milwaukee. The location was inner city. One of the public radio programs noted that some of the kids were habitually truant or discipline problems in school.

The analysis indicates that a feeding frenzy began when 1 or 2 attacked the man. This frenzy quickly increased to at least 20 or so youth. I think the youngest may have only been

9 or 10 years old. The man was killed right in the street after repeated hits with sticks, brooms, whatever the kids could grab.

I could see this kind of thing happening in school. It is hard to understand what might push 1 or more kids over the line of verbal threats to bodily harm.

Even out here in rural Wisconsin some of these disrespectful behaviors are found, even in 5th grade. While I have not been told to "shut up" I had one incident last year where several kids told me that several I had disciplined earlier were trash talking me during recess. I also had 1 8th grader get in my face and tell me I was "just" a sub., then call me a "thief" when I took a bent paper clip away from him. He also accused me of abuse when I physically pulled it out of his hand. I made it known that if I ever was treated this way again I would immediately call the office and have the kid removed. I can handle a lot but my sub. pay is not sufficient to take such verbal abuse.

I would not remain in a situation where kid(s) can get away with threats of punching me in the face. No amount of sub. pay is worth that. Police ought to be called to remove the kid for any bodily harm type of threat. I'd be calling 911 so quick on my cell phone.

You have my sympathy; I am willing to bet the teachers are not treated much better.

Best, Ken in WI
